Edge family

The Edge family from Port Elizabeth has a rich history in aquatic sports. Father Donald Edge was twice the President of the Eastern Province ASA between 1975 and 1989, while his children Mark, David, and Jennie all represented the province in various aquatic sports. 

Mark Edge is a prolific athlete who continues to achieve success in distance swimming in 2026. He graduated from Grey High, where he still holds the record for the most first 1st rugby team appearances. He swam with coach Tom Connell at the Port Elizabeth Amateur Swimming Club, where he specialised in distance freestyle events, qualifying to compete at the SA Championships from 1975 to 1977. Mark also represented EP in water polo. He won Springbok colours for both surf lifesaving (1976) and stillwater lifesaving. He also represented his country in biathlon. In 1982, he set a new record for the Robben Island crossing to Bloubergstrand, and in 2018, he completed the crossing from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco. Today, he is the head coach at the PE Amateur Swimming Club.

Jenny Edge was an Eastern Province synchronised swimmer, and her brother David Edge also represented the province in water polo.
