Uitenhage Swimming Club

In 1936, the present Uitenhage Amateur Swimming Club was formed.

The first President was R.D. Teddy Elliot, father of Peter Elliot — the first Club member to be selected to represent South Africa.

The U.A.S.C. was fortunate to have such outstand­ing members as Geoff Mandy, Peter Elliot, Arrie Snetler, Harold Hammond, Victor Kennedy and Olga Parkinson when it started, and it was immediate­ly a force in Eastern Province swimming. In the past 50 years, it has produced three Springboks in Geoff Mandy (diving), Peter Elliot and Kevin Richards (swimming). Seven of its members, Peter Elliot, Ernie Nicholson, Derek Coetzer and Kevin Richards (swimming), Geoff Mandy (diving), Mally Richards and Anthony Skinner (biathlon) have won National Championships, while Harold Hammond and Albert Boliter were presented with South African Meritorious Service Awards.

Over the years the Club has been well served by loyal and capable Administrators such as Harold Ham­mond (Secretary, Treasurer and Patron), Taffy Evans (President and Patron), Eric Dodd (President), Shirley Wadsworth (President), John Davies (President), Albert Boliter (President (23 years) and Patron), Ernie and Estelle Nicholson, Jill Boliter, Raymond Seady, Stan Coetzer, Minkey Ferreira, Basil Rabie, Ludi Schultz and in more recent years Toekie Eckley (President), Herman van Teylingen, Peter and Irene Baker, Ralph Watson, Shirley Jacobs, Jean Carter, Maria Slack, Karel Elferink, Mally Richards, Nick van Tender, Mary McClelland and Tremayn Cornish.

The Club has also been very fortunate to have had the services of such outstanding coaches as Arthur (Coxie) Harrow, Peter J. Lemley, Peter Elliot, Albert Boliter, Ernie Nicholson, Basil Rabie, Ralph Watson and Tremayn Cornish, to develop the Uitenhage swimming talent.

One of the main attributes of the Club has been its encouragement of family participation, which helped to foster the keen Club spirit that has always pre­vailed.

The Administration has as a result been mainly carried out by parents, who through their partici­pation have also provided the Club with a regular supply of very capable Officials. A number of these Officials, Harold Hammond and Albert Boliter (Referee), Toekie Eckley (Chief Judge), Herman Van Teylingen (Starter) and Karel Elferink (Water Polo) have officiated as senior officials at the National Championships.

Included in this brochure are details of members who have mainly achieved success or recognition at a National level. An attempt has been made to compile the history of the Club; unfortunately, for numerous reasons, all the details could not be obtained, and the records specified are thus only as accurate as could be compiled with the information available.

Where is Uitenhage

The area was settled in the 1790s by Dutch immigrant farmers. In 1802, De Mist travelled in the area and decided to found a town. In 1804, Uitenhage was established on a farm owned by Gert Scheepers. It became a municipality in 1877. In the 1880s, the signalman at the station, who lost both legs in an accident, trained a baboon called Jack to pull the signal levers. The baboon did the job for 9 years until his death. Cuyler Manor Museum offers demonstrations of farming activities of the 1850s

Uitenhage is a picturesque town nestled at the foothills of the Winterhoek Mountains in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Due to its temperate climate and numerous spacious parks, Uitenhage has been dubbed the Garden Town. The official flower of Uitenhage is the Strelitzia, and it grows in abundance everywhere in Uitenhage. Most gardens and parks in Uitenhage also contain a large variety of tropical and subtropical plants, which thrive in this area.

Uitenhage lies about 24 km north of Port Elizabeth. 45km north of Uitenhage lies the Addo Elephant Park, with the biggest population density of elephants in the world. Adjacent to Addo is Kirkwood, renowned for its citrus and vegetable produce

In 1804, J.A. Uitenhage de Mist, who was the Commissioner-General of the Batavian Republic, instructed Captain Alberti of Fort Frederick to select a suitable site for the new Eastern Cape District.

Alberti chose 'De Rietvallei', the Scheepers farm on the banks of the Swartkops farm. He based his choice on enduring principles - good land and water, a moderate climate and a central location. This has proved to be an excellent choice, for it became the thriving town of Uitenhage.

The first major growth occurred in the 1820's when British Settlers left their allotted farms to establish themselves in the town where their skill and crafts ensured a better living. Flour mills and brickworks were among the first enterprises started at this time, with merino sheep farming introduced into the country shortly thereafter. The soft water of the Swartkops River proved ideal for wool-washing, and wool from this district became known overseas as 'Uitenhage Snow White.' By the 1840's numerous wool-washeries had been established, ensuring another spurt of growth. A companion to the wool trade is leather work and tanneries were subsequently established.

By 1875 the transport of produce to the town and harbour of Port Elizabeth grew to such an extent that a railway line was constructed between the two towns. This link later became part of the main railway line to Cape Town and the branch lines to the Great Karoo. Establishment of the Railway Workshops for the Eastern Cape in Uitenhage provided another tremendous surge of growth for the town.

Uitenhage has many fine Schools including College Hill, Muir, Riebeek, Strelitzia, Brandwag, Handhaaf, Daniel Pienaar, Albertyn, Uitenhage College.

Places of interest include Cannon Hill, the Swartkops river, Springs Resort, Groendal Reserve, Elands River and The Station Museum. Parks in town include Strelitzia park, Magennis park and Cannon Hill.

There are several restaurants and fast food outlets, catering for those who require quick take away food to first class cuisine.

On the outskirts of the town will be found the Springs resort, site of artesian springs and a resort with chalets, picnic areas, swimming pool and tennis court.

Brian Elliot

A graduate of Grey High School in Port Elizabeth, Brian Elliot was coached by his father, Peter Elliot. After completing a one-year stint in the South African Air Force, he trained for six months with American coach Don Gambril at Pasadena College in Los Angeles before winning the 1966 South African 1650-yard freestyle title at nationals in Durban. Brian placed second behind clubmate Geoff Grylls in the 220- and 440-yard freestyle events.

AT the 1966 nationals in Durban, Brian was also a member of the Eastern Province men's freestyle relay team that won both the 4x100 and 4x200m events in new national record times. Three swimmers from the Barracuda SC of coach Peter Elliot - Brian Elliot, Jon Reen and Geoff Grylls held all of the South African freestyle records, and the fourth member, Neil Oldridge, held the 110 m butterfly record! 

At the 1967 South African Championships, Brian Elliot won four titles in the 220-, 440- and 1650-yard freestyle, as well as the 440-yard individual medley events. 

In 1968, at the new Olympic Stadium swimming pool in Bloemfontein, Brian again won the 400m and 1500m freestyle and 400m IM events, missing the 200m freestyle due to illness. Brian was selected for the South African Amateur Swimming Union (SAASU) team to compete at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games. Unfortunately, the South African team was barred from competing at the Olympic Games from 1964 to 1988.

The 1969 nationals were held at Newlands in Cape Town. Karen Muir set a new world record in the women's 440 yard IM, while Brian won the men's event in a new SA record. He also won the 220 freestyle, placing second to Jim Thorburn in both the 440 and 1650 events. 

Although he was not selected for the Springbok team to tour Europe in 1966, Brian did win national colours for European tours in 1967 and 1969 and against Rhodesia in 1968.

By 1970, Brian quit swimming and began his coaching career in Port Elizabeth, establishing the Aquabear Swimming Club in 1972.

The annual Redhouse River Mile was a feature of swimming in the Eastern Cape since 1924.  Brian's father, Peter Elliot, also a Springbok swimmer, won the Mile four times between 1936 and 1947. Geoff Grylls, also coached by Peter Elliot, won the Redhouse River Mile from 1961 to 1965, after which Brian won the title four times between 1966 and 1970. Brian's brother Derek Elliot won the River Mile in 1972 and 1973.

Aquabear Swim Club founder Brian Elliot calls time on coaching career

Elliot, 73, said his career had been filled with special moments, from teaching minors the basics of water safety and the various strokes involved, to rearing swimmers who have gone on to compete on the national and international stage.

Renowned Port Elizabeth coach Brian Elliot has called time on his illustrious career after almost five decades teaching people how to swim.
Elliot, 73, said his career had been filled with special moments, from teaching minors the basics of water safety and the various strokes involved, to rearing swimmers who have gone on to compete on the national and international stage.
Speaking to The Herald on Tuesday, Elliot felt proud of what he had achieved and the many people he has helped over the course of his career, and felt the time was right to call time on his career.
“Being involved in teaching people how to swim has brought me so much satisfaction. Through the Learn to Swim programme, teaching water safety to all individuals from babies right up to adults.
“Additionally, the coaching side has brought so much pride and joy to me, because I have many athletes who are at various levels and the success they have attained is something I am very proud of as well,” Elliot said.
Elliot was also a competitor in his early years, competing in various national championships between 1963 and 1971.
Added to this, Elliot also represented SA on two occasions in 1967 and again in 1969.
“I was born in Uitenhage and stayed there until I was about eight years old before moving to PE.
“In 1961, we built a 10-lane, 25m pool in our backyard, funnily enough in Water Road, Walmer.
“So my family was always involved in swimming, as my father did swim coaching while my mother taught people how to swim using the training pools we also had,” he said.
Having gained some experience learning and working alongside his father, Elliot said it was in 1972 when he started the now famous Aquabear Swim Club.
He said an arrangement was made that all the swimmers who trained under him would also move to the newly formed club.
“I just enjoyed swimming, and it has been part of my family’s life for such a long time.
“Having both parents so actively involved in the coaching and teaching aspects of swimming, it was always likely that I would follow in their footsteps when it came to swimming,” Elliot said.
Looking ahead, Elliot, the former president of the AquaBear Swim Club, said while the Aquabear brand would still belong to him, it would be run, by newly elected president Moira Norden, a world renowned artistic swimming coach and Bay resident.
“We have a very strong artistic swimming group who will be running the club.
“The Elliot Swimming Academy will still run it’s Learn to Swim and other programmes aimed at developing a swimmer’ stroke, but the Aquabear Club will now focus its attention on artistic swimming as opposed to the normal short-course swimming,” he said.
He said another team, Bay Eagles Swim Team (Best), are renting the pools at Elliot Swimming Academy to conduct their training and urged his own Aquabear members to join them and train, as they look to prepare for future competitions.
“At the moment, we have only a few registered swimmers with Aquabear due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“All [Best] competitive swimmers are swimming at our pools, so I think it might be better for our swimmers to join up with them instead of being with Aquabear.
“This will give them a chance to get involved with more swimmers and swim relays, which would not be possible if we had to keep Aquabear going,” Elliot said.

Canadian swimmers like Elaine Tanner and Ron Jacks toured South Africa during the Karen Muir era -

One of Canada’s finest swimmers of the 1960s, Ron Jacks started swimming at six years old. His family moved to Vancouver from Winnipeg in 1955, and within two years Jacks was enjoying competitive swimming. In his formative years, he trained with the Vancouver “Y” swim club, under Canadian coach Ted Simpson, until its demise in 1966.

While swimming with the ‘Y,’ Ron won many medals at the 1964, 1965, and 1966 national championships, and attended the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo as a member of the Canadian swim team. He would also join the Canadian team for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and the 1972 Munich Olympics.

In April of 1966, after training in California under Olympic coach Don Gambril, Jacks took the bronze in the 100-yard butterfly at the US nationals and won a full athletic scholarship at the University of Indiana. He attended Indiana from 1966-72, and trained under coach Doc Counsilman.

During the summer months, Jacks returned from Indiana to participate in the Canadian championships, winning numerous medals and setting seven Canadian records between 1965-72.

In 1966, at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, Jacks won his first international medals: gold in the 110-yard butterfly, gold in the 440-yard medley relay, and silver in both the 440-yard medley relay and the 880-yard freestyle relay.

Over the next few years he would follow this with a series of international medals: three silver (400m medley relay, 400m freestyle relay, and 800m freestyle relay) at the 1967 Winnipeg Pan American Games, two silver (400m freestyle relay, 800m freestyle relay) and one bronze (100m freestyle relay) at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia.

In 1972, Jacks retired from competitive swimming and turned to coaching and training many of Canada’s top swimmers, including BC Sports Hall of Famers Shannon Smith (1976 Olympic bronze medalist) and Pam Rai (1986 Commonwealth Games gold medalist).

Coach Peter Elliot

Peter Elliot and his son Brian Elliot were both Springbok swimmers who became successful swimming coaches in Port Elizabeth.

At the South African swimming championships of 1939 and again in 1940, Peter Elliot won the 500 and 880 yards freestyle events. In 1939 he also placed second to the 1934 Empire Games silver medallist Terry Collard in the 220-yard event. He was then selected to swim for South Africa against the touring Australian team of Noel Ryan, Bob Masters and Ron Wiltshire. 

As a coach, Peter Elliot produced several national champions, including his son Brian Elliot, who was one of his most successful swimmers. Other Springboks coached by Peter Elliot were Brian Elliot, Geoff Grylls, Neil Oldridge and Jon Reen (below).

PETER ELLIOT, a former Springbok swimmer from the Eastern Province and one of the best swimming instructors in South Africa is head of this well-known swimming family.

As an instructor, he played a large role in the swimming success of his son Brian, Geoff Grylls, Neil Aldridge and Jonathan Reen. The four who all gained Springbok colours in the 1960's were by far the best swimmers that EP delivered at that time.

Peter's wife, Sheila, supported his coaching endeavours, while Helen, Derek and Gregory, the other family members, were all top EP swimmers. Brian and Helen were well-known instructors in their own right.

Peter was born in Uitenhage and attended St Andrews Junior School before matriculating at Muir College. His school sports included athletics, swimming, rugby and cricket.

Peter recalls the tough swimming galas between Muir and Grey while he was at school, with Muir winning the Clint-trophy for 13 years running.

Geoff Mandy, who represented SA in the Olympic Games in London in 1948, was, along with Peter, a stalwart in Muir's swimming team. Peter speaks highly of the training they received under their swimming coach, Arthur (Coxie) Harrow.

As a scholar, Peter represented EP in freestyle. He made his debut for EP in 1935 at the SA Championships held at the old swimming pool in North End. He came third in the 880 yards and fourth in the 500 yard races.

In 1936, in Bulawayo, he came second in the 500 and 880 yards, and in 1937 in Johannesburg he again came second in the 880 yards, but this time third in the 500.

Peter joined the mines in Brakpan in 1937, and swam for Transvaal in 1938, 1939 and 1940. In 1939 and 1940 he won the 880 and 500 yards freestyle events.

In 1939 he was awarded his Springbok colours when he competed in Durban against the Australian touring team. Peter was placed third in the 440-yard race. In 1942, Peter joined the Air Force when he returned to Uitenhage. He was in Rome for two years and represented the Mediterranean region. Geoff Mandy and Duncan Melville were also part of the team.

Peter was 27 years old when he took part in the SA Champs in Pretoria in 1946. EP Management convinced him to represent them at the SA Championships held in PE the following year, which would be his last appearance for EP.

Peter carried on taking part competitively in galas till the age of 31, and at that age, along with Ernie Nicholson, Alf Boliter and Paul Winer, set a new EP record in the 4x100 freestyle medley.

The Redhouse River Mile was one of his favourite events. He won the race in 1935, 1936, 1945 and 1946. In 1947, Peter joined the EP management and in 1950 became a professional coach..

Springbok Shirley van der Poel was also coached under Peter. His son Brian made a name for himself swimming for the USA in 1966 and again with the Springboks in 1967, and Britain and Europe in 1968.

Oom Kobie of soos die swemmers en atlete hom genoem het “Coach” is op die ouderdom van 84 oorlede, 4 Mei 2012 op Sasolburg.

Hy was n baie goeie sportman in sy jeug en het reeds in sy matriek jaar vir VanRhynsdorp se dorp se eerste Rugby span gespeel.

Hy is toe Stellenbosch toe om Jokkel te swot. Jokkel is die bynaam vir die graad BSc in Liggaamsopvoeding maar aan die einde van sy eerste jaar breek hy vir die tweede keer sy enkel en besluit toe om Polisie toe te gaan waar hy onmiddelik opgeneem word as LO Instrukteur en met die rang van Sersant maak hy vir hom naam as n goeie rugby senter, uitnemende gimnas en 440 hekkies atleet.

Hy rig vir Daan bekker, en Eddie Ludick (Die bekende Willie Ludick se broer) af in boks wat by die “Common Wealth Games” medaljes verower het, asook Willie Welgemoed as Olimpiese Duikplank spanlid in dieselfde tyd. Na vier jaar van rekrute fiks maak, 1950 aanvaar hy die pos in sport en ontspanning by VESCO wat dan later Vanderbijlpark stadsraad geword het. In 1976 verhuis hy na Sasolburg.

Hy rig vir jare die Vanderbijlpark Rugby klub sowel as die ou Iscor rugby klub en later die Sasolburg Rugby klubs af. Sommer so saam met die afrigting speel hy ook nog rugby. Hy verteenwoordig die ou Transvaal sub-unie rugby span in 1953, 1954 en 1955. Intussen verteenwoordig hy ook die ou Transvaal in stoei en toer na die destydse Rhodesia waar hy n goue medalje in die middel gewig behaal. Op 52 jarige ouderdom breek hy sy elmboog want hy wou net gou instaan vir n senter wat nie vir die derde span opgedaag het nie.

Hier word hy genoodsaak om swem af te rig maar die arme man het in stof grootgeword in die Riemland. Tog begin hy die Dolfyne swemklub op Vanderbijlpark en nie lank nie word die klub sterk genoeg om in die eerste liga van die ou Transvaal te swem. Deur die jare het hy meer as 15000 kinders leer swem en het hom later meer toegespits op die provinsiale en nasionale swemmers en 18 Springbok swemmers het onder sy leiding internasionaal deelgeneem. Hy het twee Springbok Kanovaarders afgerig sowel as 3 twee kamp atlete tot Springbokke afgerig. Hy spog tot met twee onderwater hokkie Springbokke en een Vyfkamp Springbok

Oor die tydperk verwerf oom Kobie self Springbok Kleure as die afrigter van die Nasionale span na die VSA sowel as die destydse besoekende Rhodesia span. Coach Kobie Louw was baie bekend onder al die swemmers as 'n uitmuntende motiveerder en al ons nuwe swemhelde soos Ryk Neetling, Penny Heyns en selfs die prinses van Monaco is goed bewus van sy oordeel en oog vir talent.

Hy word president van die Suid Afrikaanse swem afrigetrs Vereeniging vir drie jaar en word ook bekroon met die Presidensiele sport meriete toekenning vir swem.

Kobie Louw laat sy vrou Eleanor, drie kinders (Deon 59, Tinus 56 en Karen 53) na. Daar is ook tien klein kinders en 2 agter kleinkinders.

Sports clubs of  South Africa

The British colonists in southern Africa established sports clubs throughout the region. Port Elizabeth was founded after the arrival of the first British settlers in 1820, and they created the oldest cricket club in South Africa there in 1843. In Rhodesia, the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo dates from 1894. established on May 20, 1920. The Sporting Clube de Lourenço Marques was established in 1920 and still exists in 2026. 

Water polo and swimming were the first aquatic sports disciplines to create clubs in South Africa. Diving and 'artistic swimming" were also popular activities, but the men who set up the clubs focused primarily on water polo.

Sport was the glue that maintained empire. It kept communities together and provided opportunities for leisure and entertainment. 

Uitenhage SC

Uitenhage Public Swimming Baths were erected in 1898, when the first local swimming club was established.
