Jeff Wiggill

Jeff Wiggill was a Transvaal breaststroke swimmer who won the 200m event at the SA Championships in Johannesburg in 1978. He also finished second to Dougie Eager in the 100m event. He was a member of the Springbok team that swam against Rhodesia that year.

Jeffery Mark Wiggill was born in October 1958, and he died on 19 June 2013, aged 55. He matriculated at Northlands High School in 1975 and went to the University of the Witwatersrand to study accounting. He worked for Anglo American from Jan 1985 to Jan 1990. He was later involved in the founding of the Crawford College and then set up his own company, First Tech, in 1992. You can read his LinkedIn profile here.

Jeff Wiggill died in mysterious circumstances on 19 June 2013, aged 55, on a road outside Soweto, with several gunshot wounds to the head, next to his black Bentley. At the time, First Tech was in serious financial trouble, with allegations of large-scale fraud being levelled at Jeff after his death, and company debts of over R2,5 billion.

Co-founded by Wiggill and Andy Bertulis, the engineering and construction conglomerate built a multi-billion-rand empire on systemic deception that went completely unnoticed for nearly 20 years. When Wiggill was shot dead in an apparent assisted suicide/execution in June 2013, the entire house of cards collapsed overnight, leaving massive state institutions and private commercial banks holding billions in unrecoverable debt.
