Robert Kiphuth is considered to be one of the best American swimming coaches ever. SAASU President Harry Getz invited USA coach Bob Kiphuth to visit South Africa while in Brazil for the 1963 Universiade (World Student games). Kiphuth had previously visited in 1956, and gave a lecture (4MB pdf).
Kiphuth was a legend in the USA where he was inducted into the International Swimmining Hall of Fame in 1965. He was largely responsible for the modern sport of swimming, which he shaped by introducing such innovations (now standard practices) as dryland workouts and interval training.
