13 March 1959 - Ellis Park swiming pool, Johannesburg. The Australian swimming tour of South Africa opened with a new South African record in the 110 freestyle by Australian John Devitt, who was to win the event at the 1960 Olympic Games.
15 March 1959. Local Springbok Tich McLachlan becomes the first South African to beat one of the visiting Australians at a gala in Pietermaritzburg.
19 March 1959 - The Australian swimmers competed in Port Ellizabeth at the St Georges Baths.
