Noord Transvaal

In 1906 the South African swimming and water polo championships were held at a venue other than Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, at the Central Baths in Pretoria. At that time the Northern Transvaal ASA was not yet in existence, and the event was hosted by the Transvaal ASA.

Northern Transvaal, now known as Northern Tigers Swimming, has produced many Springboks over the years. Jimmy Green was a leading coach in Pretoria during the 1920's and 30's, producing SA champions like Zus Engelenberg and Kathleen Russell.  In 1932 Green produced an Olympic silver medallist when Jenny Maakal came second in the 440 yards freestyle at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Unfortunately the province has published only details of administrators, and neglected to mention their champion competitors!

Some of their names are: Jenny Maakal (Olympic medalist), Zus Engelenberg, Rhoda Rennie (Olympic medalist), Suzette Jansen, Anton van Niekerk, Brian Steward, Jaco Kruger - and many more.

In mid 1991, South Africa was informed by the IOC to send a team to the Olympics for the first time since 1960. Olympic Trials was scheduled for March 1992 in Durban. Today, the Kingspark Pool is awesome and stages the World Cup, but in 1992 it had a roof and 2 walls only creating a wind tunnel effect since the pool is built on the beach and strong oceanic winds speeds through the natatorium. The water was freezing, but the competition went on. Nebraska had a strong presence there. See how many faces you could pick out (I can't remember all the names). Seddon Keyter& Peter Williams at the far back. Mark Nieuwenhuis in 3rd row. Peter G in second row. Gary Albertyn, myself, Lee Pennefather, Cal and Alan in the front. I count 5 Albertyn's in the pic alone. Peter Williams & Seddon made the Olympic team for Barcelona. — with Gary Albertyn, Kristy Albertyn, Peter Girardeau, Lee Pennefather, Cal Bentz, Seddon Keyter, Alan Kelsey, Mark Nieuwenhuis and Lesley Nieuwenhuis.

As langafstandswemmer het ek 5 myl per dag geoefen.
