Outside of the towns along the N4 highway between Johannesburg and Mozambique that bisects the province, there are very few towns or schools with swimming pools. In some places, like Ermelo, the school pool has been filled in, while the town pool is derelict.
The old Eastern Transvaal was much bigger than the area now covered by the Mpumalanga province, including Volksrust in the south and Groblersdal and Hoedspruit in the northeast.
There are school swimming pools that still appear to be functional, although no information about any aquatic sports at those schools seems to be available. Ther include Amersfoort Primary, George Hofmeyer HS in Standerton and Secunda.
In Lydenburg, there is swimming at Extreme Aquatics and a school pools at the Estralita Special School, which is also home to the Estralita SC. However none of the schools seem to have a pool, and there is no dorpswembad visible any more.
The Pongola Swimming Academy operates from the pool at the Pongola Akademie, coached by Willie Hystek. The pool was opened in 1966.

With an average annual temperature of only 14,7 degrees Celsius, the town once boasted an indoor swimming pool, now derelict. A 1938 newspaper article indicates that there was swimming in the town at some stage. Unfortunately, the local high school has filled in its swimming sometime after 2003. Local swimmers like Anja Wege now travel 200km's to the Pongola Academy to swim.

Former holders of the Transvaal schools rugby trophy - the Administrators Cup -this school is serious about sports. In swimming they boast the following achievements:
2007 - Olympian and two-times African Swimmer of the Year Karin Prinsloo completes matric.
2013 : 26 swemmers neem deel aan die SA Kampioenskappe.
2014 : Verwerf 35 medaljes tydens die Limpopo Top Tien Skole Kampioenskappe / Johan Moolman wen ’n goue medalje tydens SA Swem Kampioenskappe.
2015 : Johan Moolman aangewys as beste swemmer vir o.18 (50m vlinderslag).
2016 : MJ en Anina Koekemoer is opgeneem in die Limpopo swemspan.
2017 : Ses swemmers word opgeneem in Limpopo swemspan. Tweede tydens Interhoër swem. Tweede tydens Top 10 skole swem
2018 : Ses swemmers word opgeneem in Limpopo swemspan. Tweede plek tydens Bosveld Interhoër en derde plek tydens Top 10 skole swemgala
2019: Verwerf 'n tweede plek tydens die Interhoër sowel as 'n tweede plek tydens die Top 10 skole swemgala. Coenraad de Beer verwerf twee silwer medaljes tydens die SA Skole swemkampioenskappe
2020: Coenraad de Beer word genooi om aan die Senior Nasionale Swemkampioenskappe sowel as Olimpiese proewe deel te neem.
Laerskool Marble Hall is the alma mater of Olympian Karin Prinsloo, where the school continues its swimming tradition in 2020.
Malelane is a small dorpie near a gate into the Kruger Park.
The state primary school at Malalane was founded in 1948 and built its swimming pool in 1966. Henning Radley was presented with the Mpumalanga Swimming Junior Boy Swimmer of the Year award for 2019/20, after winning nine individual gold medals at the Mpumalanga Swimming ChampionshipThe school competes locally against Komatipoort Akademie, Uplands College, Curro Nelspruit, Riverview Prep, Laerskool Bergland, Laerskool Barberton, and Penryn College.
The private school for English medium teaching opened in 1997. There is a 6 lane swimming pool, and the pupils compete in local inter-school galas swimming as well as biathle/triathlon multisport. In 2019 Jaime Maritz represented her Nelspruit Swimming Academy swimming club for the Mpumalanga Provincial Team during the Golfinhos Sprint Gala in Maputo, winning 2 gold medals (U/10 freestyle relay and medley relay) and 3 bronze medals (U/10 backstroke, freestyle and butterfly).
February 2018 - Riverview swimmers Megan Swart and sisters Ruby and Lucy James swam the annual Midmar Mile.

7 December 2018 - Komatipoort Swimming Club at the Mpumalanga provincial championships at Nelspruit. Kobus Lourens, Kari Bekker, Riandie Kruger, (second row) Xandri Botha, Marli Esser, Christn Engelbrecht, Zarlia Engelbrecht, Ame Bekker, Kate Kuhn (coach), (third row) Danie du Toit, WG Engelbrecht, Riani Niewenhuis, Maritza van Tonder (assistant coach), (back) Corbin Visagi, Mel Stronkhorst and Stephan Kuhn (coach).
This Eastern Transvaal Lowveld town is located south of the Nelspruit. There is a local club known as the Barberton Marines SC. Local swimmers compete across the border in Swaziland, in open water events, and provincial swimming galas.
The town has two functioning school swimming pools and two dead municipal pools.
10 Maart, 2013 - Liza-Mari Drummond van Hoërskool Barberton het die naweek van 1-3 Maart aan die Swaziland Nasionale Swemkampioenskappe in Mbabane deelgeneem as lid van die Mpumalanga-Swemspan.
8 April 2019 - Barberton Hoërskool leerlinge wat kwalifiseer vir die Suid Afrikaanse swem Kampioenskappe in Sasolburg - Phillip Lombaard, Adriaan Havenga, Jeandré van Loggerenberg en Tanya Verster.
Dating from 1858 the dorpie is a typical platteland town - with a function swimming pool at the high school and another run by the municipality. Heleen Viljoen runs a swim school at her own indoor facility.
In swimming news, it is perhaps best known for its role in the 2020 Swim for Rivers for Life campaign, when Andrew Chin, Dr. Mandy Uys, and Joy Roach swam 10km's down the Bronkhorstspruit between Bronkhorstspruit and the Premier Mine Dam.
The local schools also participate in biathle. Dano Kruger was selected to compete at the 2016 World Biathle Championships held at Sarasota, Florida.
Heidelberg Volkskool is the town school, and the high school has a 10 lane swimming pool. The Victor Aquatum Swim School has built an indoor facility. There is, or was, a pool at the Heidelberg military base.
The Volkskool has produced several top swimmers. 2019 Marticulant Jandré Moll has taken up a scholarship to swim at the Florida Tech University.
10 Julie 2017 - Cristopher Strydom van Victor Aquantum Swemskool het sewe goue medaljes, een silwer en ‘n brons medalje tydens die Sasol Nasionale Winterkampioenskappe in Sasolburg verower. Hy het ook die rekord in die 200m rugslag vir seuns o/10 met 15 sekondes verbeter. Jandré Moll het vyf goue medaljes, een silwer en twee brons medaljes ingepalm. Hy het twee nuwe rekords in die 200m asook die 50m vryslag opgestel.
Christopher Strydom (10) van Victor Aquantum Swemskool is tans nommer een op Swem Suid-Afrika se ranglys vir beide die 50m en 100m rugslag items vir seuns o/10. Christopher is ‘n Graad 5-leerder van Laer Volkskool en swem reeds vandat hy drie jaar oud is. Sy afrigter, Thilde Victor sê daar lê nog groot hoogtes vir Christopher voor.
