The war once again disrupted social activities, so organized aquatic sports - at least for the men - were curtailed. In the war theatre sports were an integral of life in the military bases, while at home in South Africa, the annual national championship was canceled, although club activities continued.
Springbok swimmer Peter Elliot competed in the 1940 Mediterranean Allied Swimming Championships. In 1945 he swam in the inter-theatre championships in Rome.
Leaving behind a promising swimming career, Silvia 'Jo' Mortimer joined the war effort,. and became the Egyptian Servicers Champion from 1943-1946.
